BA Botanicals’ Sungrown Cannabis

BA Botanicals

BA Botanicals’ Second Season of Legal Sungrown Cannabis

Last year I photographed the beautiful BA Botanicals, a sungrown farm in Estacada, Oregon. This year the owner, Sebastian, invited me back. I gladly accepted, as I couldn’t wait to see their second year of growth.

Similar to the previous year, what I notice upon entry is the number of genetics at BA Botanicals. Sebastian has a plethora of plants, some freshly blooming and others ready to harvest. Mouth watering strains like Orangeade, Purple Punch and Papaya line the rows.

Ooze’s Silicone Pipe is a Treat

It’s no trick, Ooze’s Silicone Pipe is a real treat

Whether I’m running through a corn maze or dodging ghosts on All Hallows’ Eve, I need a piece that can keep up. It’s why I love Ooze’s new Stack Silicone Pipe.

Water percolation makes for smooth hits, durable silicone means no worries if you drop it during a moment of fright, and my personal favorite — THEIR GREEN PIECE GLOWS IN THE DARK. Seriously, hits in the dark? Not a problem. You will always see this piece. Just be careful, because the goblins and ghouls will want to hit it too.

Bullying Prevention and Women in Weed

Bulling Prevention and why women in weed need to lead by example

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. People tend to think of the cannabis community as open minded, progressive, accepting and tolerant. However, in my almost five years in the industry, I have seen a LOT of bullying in the industry. Today I want to speak out about my experiences being bullied by women in weed. I hope this post helps other victims of bullying know they are not alone, life will get better and to have the courage to speak out.

Before I go any further, I’d like to clarify a couple things. I felt torn sharing usernames of women involved. While the dominant Aries in me wants to call out everyone’s shit, what good does that do? When women hate on women, everyone loses. So lucky for those who hid behind their devices. I’m sharing my story, and helping save face in the process. I don’t want women to receive the same bullying I did. I also don’t want women to gain clout off their actions. So sit back, spark up and get ready for the most anxiety filled blog I’ve ever written.

Three Amazon Spheres, One Cannabess

Checking Out Jeff’s Balls at the Amazon Spheres

Around this time last year I found myself in a deactivation battle with Instagram. I debated my career in cannabis. Heck, I even considered applying at more corporate jobs. Even though the idea of working in a place like the Amazon Spheres sounds appealing, I can’t fathom doing anything besides work in weed.

I’m the product of a small business owner. My dad spent 17 years working at a government funded nuclear facility. Despite good pay and benefits, you know what? He hated it. My dad eventually pursued his own dreams, starting a niche model airplane magazine. Similar to what I do for cannabis, he shoots photos, writes articles, sends email newsletters

Blazing Trees in a Fig Tree at Balboa Park

Honey, I Shrunk Myself Smoking at Balboa Park

Do you ever think about how small humans are in the scheme of things? The observable universe is estimated to contain 200 billion to 2 trillion galaxies. Heck, even fig trees like this can live up to 200 years. Needless to say, while blazing up at Balboa Park, my existence on Earth feels like a microcosm.

During my last trip to San Diego, I reconnected with Arielle Levy, one of my favorite fashion and beauty photographers. I’ve wanted to shoot at Balboa Park for awhile, especially since I knew it entailed a majestic cactus garden. However, once I saw this gargantuan fig tree, knew it Balboa Park is one of San Diego’s must-shot locations.

From Kelowna to Calgary, We Got Baked Through Banff

It seems like just yesterday, Melissa and I made our way across Canada in an epic road trip. I’d just wrapped a shoot at Vitalis Extraction Technology. We couldn’t wait to see the big mountains and blue waters of Banff.

We started our road trip with a surprise car rental. By surprise, I mean they charge you a $300 fee to drop the car off in another province. Apparently it doesn’t matter if the car needs to be returned to Calgary. They’ll charge you anyway. Alas, with no other option, we kicked off our Banff adventure.

Why I’m a Loud, Proud, Libertarian

July 30, 2019

Ditch the two party paradigm and vote Libertarian

Tonight marks the second Democratic presidential debate. While most Americans gear up for 2020 by fighting over the two-party establishment, I can’t. I believe our country needs a third party, one that promotes liberty, limited government and bodily autonomy. That’s why I am a loud, proud, pot smoking, freedom loving Libertarian.

After college, I spent a year in socialist China and it changed my life. Living overseas woke me up to issues like the US national debt, government spying and suppression of free speech. China represented a turning point in my life, and it’s why I’m so vocal about politics today.

My visit to Vitalis, a Leader in Responsible Extraction Manufacturing

Sure we all think about what’s in our extracts. But do you ever think about the technology used to make them? I recently visited Vitalis Extraction Technology, to learn more about this leader in responsible extraction manufacturing.

Vitalis produces more than extraction technology. They manufacture the most sophisticated Supercritical CO2 extraction system in the world. So what does that mean?

Stop and Smell the Terpenes with Pearl Extracts

Not all extracts are created equal. Some contain cannabis terpenes, others use plant derived. Some extracts are Clean Green Certified, while others, well… They just aren’t. It’s why with all the extracts on the market, I know I can trust Pearl Extracts.

Pearl Extracts is one of the first processors I worked with upon entering the i502 industry. They ran material for Western Cultured, before transitioning their focus to sungrown cannabis. Fast forward four years, and I feel blessed to call them one of my clients.

Mary Jane Swim’s Summer ’19 Cannabis Swimwear

Diving in to Summer with my Favorite Cannabis Swimwear

It’s no secret I love swimwear. One-pieces, bikinis, solids or prints — if it’s swimwear, I’ll take it. Last fall I shared a new cannabis swimwear line called Mary Jane Swim. I instantly fell in love with their long-sleeve one-piece, so couldn’t wait to share their new 2019 line.

What stands out most this season is Mary Jane Swim now makes more than cannabis swimwear. Co-founders Stacey and Diane have expanded to include their cannabis prints on leggings and workout bags. Don’t ask how (ok, it was 85 degrees and we smoked a few joints) but we forgot to photograph the leggings I hiked here in. Alas, they’ve got the same cute swimwear prints now on leggings.

The year? 2016. I’d been in the legal industry nin The year? 2016. I’d been in the legal industry nine months, and this would mark my first full year in i502.

In February 2016, a Tinder date asked if people called me Cannabess. I said, “No, but they’re about to.”

I started my account a few days later and found it easy to grow an audience. Sure, Instagram had restrictions on *garden* content, but the timeline was chronological and they didn’t have AI flagging photos. Nug shots were a huge part of my feed, and I remember the first time one broke 500 likes. Then High Times shared my photos and I realized there might be something here.

That April, I’d go from working for a single farm, to working at a creative agency which allowed me to photograph one of the biggest grows in the state. I saw SO. MUCH. W33D. And social media loved it. I’d take pictures in the bloom rooms, holding massive bins, and tubs of pre-rolls. People weren’t used to seeing it. Repost pages would share my work and get thousands of likes.

I started to shoot more lifestyle content (which wasn’t really a thing then) and it opened even more doors. I smoked joints at the top of the mountains, next to lush waterfalls, basically anywhere I could. Friends and I would get dressed up to do editorials for fun. Then brands started to want lifestyle content as a way to break the stigma of the plant.

@LazyBeeGardens invited me to photograph their farm, and it was my first time seeing sun grown plants. The photos I shot here took my content to the next level and resulted in a repost from Tommy Chong. I couldn’t believe it.

2016 seems like just yesterday, but it also feels like a lifetime ago. I was only 29, getting ready to embark on the next decade, and a whole new chapter in life. I am forever thankful for the doors the industry opened and that part of my story. It’s wild to look back on and if the growth of the next decade is anything like the last, I can’t wait for what’s ahead. 🍁🙏🏼📸

In 2015, I found my career at a crossroads. I was In 2015, I found my career at a crossroads. I was already in politics and living in LA, when I got a job offer in a budding industry.

Do I move to DC and pursue politics or do I move back to my home state of Washington and jump into pot?

Everyone told me to go to DC, but @wilrbyers was the only one who said to get into the industry. “It’s recession proof,” he said.

Over the years my mom would say things like, “Do you ever think about if you’d gotten into politics?”

But the whole experience really showed how everything happens when the time is right. The industry opened so many doors, was a pivotal point in my career, and eventually led me back to politics.

How did you end up in the industry? 💁🏻‍♀️📸🌱 #cannabess

Your conspiracy theorist friend was right and you Your conspiracy theorist friend was right and you owe them an apology.

It’s kind of crazy to look back at COVID and realize all my predictions came true. The pandemic led to a massive increase in new government debt and an erosion of freedom. Masks didn’t work and vaccine mandates were next. The vaccine also didn’t work and had a slew of life-altering side effects. Medical segregation was wrong and should never have happened.

At the time, I remember being so distraught. I got put on a “Karen’s” page (most likely by women in weed) because I spoke out against mask mandates. Clients canceled contracts. I saw my income decline almost $10K a month. Thousands of people unfollowed me every time I spoke out. People emailed me to say they hope I got COVID and died. I lost best friends of decades and familial relationships will never be the same. And guess what? I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

In hindsight, the pandemic was the best thing that ever happened to me. It revealed peoples’ true authoritarian colors and opened the door for new, freedom-focused friendships. It led me from pot back to politics, where I am thriving. I look back at the pandemic and laugh because not only was I right, I also don’t have to worry about myocarditis.

I’ve had only one person apologize for their treatment of me during the pandemic, and it truly meant more than I can put into words. It’s not too late to apologize to your conspiracy theorist friend. So put your ego aside, pick up the phone, and say sorry.

This year I shot a lot of cannabis content but bar This year I shot a lot of cannabis content but barely posted any of it. Why?

I found myself burnt out, uninspired in the industry and honestly, sick of staring at a screen. My hormones were totally out of whack and as a result, my hair kept falling out. I’d neglected my health and hated how I looked in photos. So in July, at the guidance of my naturopath, I did a 30-day detox. I quit my favorite plant cold turkey. Then my detox just kind of extended to 113 days. Honestly, the only reason I even smoked again was for a photo shoot (which I never even posted).

So anyway, here’s a recap of 2024 content that never made the feed. Maybe I’ll post more in the upcoming year, or maybe my energy is just shifting from pot to politics, where I’ve seen an insane amount of growth the last 365 days.

If you want to see what I’m doing outside of the industry, follow my personal page @BessByers where I am more active and who knows, maybe the break this year is the motivation I need for the next year? 🍁🤷🏻‍♀️📸 #Cannabess

However, I like to add a little something extra to my drinks. The muddled strawberries give me flashbacks to the unlimited strawberry lemonade I would down at a popular burger joint as a kid.

I recommend Sungaze to EVERYONE (especially the strawberry citrus) because they are so tasty and the perfect micro dose. No joke. Loved ones who don’t consume say these help them sleep better at night. Friends who want a healthier alternative to wine have replaced their afterwork glass with a can of Sungaze. When I find myself in social settings where people day drink, I’ll bring these and be the last one standing.

If you’re in Washington, these are a must-try and in case you’re wondering… No, this isn’t sponsored. They’re just that good. 🍓🍋🍁 #cannabess

Sounds like a good reason to decriminalize, so people can grow their own and not be dependent on corrupt, corporate cannabis Chads who never grew prior to legalization.
