After 29 years, I finally smoked weed with my dad. Check out WatchCut’s latest video, where parents and kids smoke weed together for the first time.
It all started in early December. My friend Ryan reached out to ask if I knew anyone who hadn’t smoked weed with their parents. He mentioned the production company’s previous work, a little video of grandma’s smoking weed. Maybe you’ve seen it? 27 million views.
It took roughly 30 seconds to convince my dad to drive over Snoqualmie Pass in a raging snowstorm for the sake of a first-time smoke sesh. His willingness to participate, you’d think he’s been waiting for me to ask!
To prepare for the shoot I rolled special joints. In the last two years, my dad has consumed cannabis twice. Both times he got too high and paranoid. That’s the last thing we need on camera. For Dad’s joint I rolled Moani’s high-CBD Hawaiian Dream with a Legends Blue Dream. As for my joint, I loaded it with Blue Dream and Dutch Treat, then topped it off with a little Super Lemon Haze wax.
We arrived to the production studios on Saturday morning. They mic’d us up, gave a rundown and then — 3, 2, 1, action!
Filming started slow. We explained our backstories, last smoke, thoughts on cannabis and industry trends. I felt confident, like I’m providing great talking points for the final edit.
Soon we sparked up and it didn’t take long to feel the effects. Potent pot aside, the moment felt surreal. I just kept thinking, “keep it together Bess. It’s all in your head. He’s high too. You’re doing fine!”
At one point we discussed pot and politics. My dad talked about the drug war’s insanity. We spend billions a year to lock up nonviolent drug offenders at the taxpayer expense. If you know my penchant for politics, you understand why this brought me to tears.
Towards the end of taping, the production team asked us to play “I’ve Never.” Unbeknownst to us, this game can get a little raunchy. A couple questions in and they’d started asking us about threesomes and sex tapes. Ummm… This is my dad and you’re killing my high. #Awkward
Filming wrapped with a few final thoughts. We toasted our joints, took a few more bong tokes, then agreed we’ll enjoy cannabis together again soon.
The day the video dropped, we didn’t anticipate the feedback. Viewers recognized me on High Times’ writeup (thank you!) and from there it exploded. World Star Hip Hop, HERB, Ludacris and others shared the video. Across all channels and shares, we received over 30 million views!
Thank you again to WatchCut for this unforgettable opportunity. I know decades from now I’ll still watch this video. It is proof my dad will do anything, and I mean anything, for his daughter!
