Making Our Community Heard on Cannabis Blackout Day
On Instagram’s release date October 6, 2010, only five states allowed medical cannabis consumption. As we approach Instagram’s eighth birthday, laws have changed and legalization is going global. The only place legalization is not happening is on Instagram. As a way to make our community heard, I ask everyone to participate in #CannabisBlackoutDay on October 6.
If you’re a cannabis company, publisher, photographer or advocate on Instagram, you are all-too-familiar with their vague Terms of Service. Posts get deleted for violating the rules. Pages are deactivated without notice. Sometimes they’re reinstated claiming the deactivation “happened by mistake” while other times pages don’t come back at all. It’s infuriating and needs to change. So how can you help?
Cannabis Blackout Day is simple. Just follow these simple steps:
– Completely abstain from Instagram. That’s right, no posts, stories or DM’s. Don’t even open the app. If you’re obsessed with IG like me, delete the app from your phone for 24 hours.
– Tell everyone you know about our digital protest and use the hashtag #CannabisBlackoutDay.
That’s it! With 10.2 million #CannabisCommunity hashtags on Instagram, our voice has strength in numbers. We are all in this fight together and I appreciate your support as we push for change, one digital protest at a time!
